What this is

A complete injection mold, from your part file

Mold Design is our core service. You give us a 3D part; we design the full injection mold around it — core and cavity, mold base, ejection, cooling, and any slides or lifters for undercuts. You get 3D files, drawings and a report — a complete design package. AI does the repetitive drafting; a 40-year mold maker owns the decisions that matter.

Built to your shop's standards

HASCO, DME and Misumi standard mold bases — internationally recognized, so your design speaks your shop's language.

Files that just open

Delivered as STEP, IGES, 2D DWG and native. We tell you our software version so nothing fails to open.

Written in English

Every drawing, note and report is in plain English — no black box, no “ask your supplier.”

Service scope

What we design — and what we don't

We'd rather tell you up front. This service is for plastic injection molds. If your project is on the right, message us first — we may still help, but it's quoted differently.

In scope

  • Plastic injection molds (ABS, PP, PC, nylon, PA-GF, etc.)
  • Single and multi-cavity molds
  • Cold runner and hot runner systems
  • Molds with slides, lifters and undercut mechanisms
  • 2-plate and 3-plate mold bases
  • Part cleanup / redesign for moldability

By inquiry (quoted separately)

  • Metal injection molding (MIM) tooling
  • Die casting, blow molding, stamping / press dies
  • Silicone / LSR and rubber molds
  • Reverse-engineering from a physical sample only
  • Cutting steel / making the mold (we design; ask us for a shop)
What you get

Deliverables

All included in a Mold Design order. Formats adjustable to fit your shop.

About the machining drawings. They're process-specific — China and overseas machining differ, so drawings tuned for one shop can misfire in another. They're finalized with whoever cuts the steel: if you build with us they come with the build; if you build elsewhere we hand over the 3D design and design intent and coordinate with your shop. Either way, the design is yours and is never locked to one factory.
How it works

From your part to a build-ready mold

You send the part

3D file, material, volume, requirements. NDA first if you want. The clock starts once we have what we need.

AI drafts the mold

Parting, mold base, cooling and standard parts laid out; automated moldability checks run.

The Shifu reviews

A 40-year mold maker checks every mold — undercuts, mechanisms, parting — and fixes what AI can't judge.

You get deliverables

3D, 2D and a labeled DFM report, with a PDF summary. Two free re-reviews included.

Where we're honest

Every finding is labeled by how sure we are

Most suppliers hide this. Automation is great at some checks and blind to others — so instead of one confident-sounding report, we tag each finding. You always know what's proven and what still needs a human eye.

See how we label each finding
LabelMeansWhere we use it
MeasuredChecked against real geometryDimensions, wall thickness, deep holes
SimulatedFrom a Moldflow runGate location, fill, basic warpage
AI-DraftAutomated first pass — needs confirmingDraft angles, cavity count
Engineer-ReviewedThe Shifu looked at it directlyUndercuts, slides & lifters, parting
Straight talk: automated checks can miss undercuts and mechanisms — we've proven that on our own test parts. That's why a human reviews every mold, and why we never promise “the AI caught everything.” We don't guarantee a production result (that also depends on your machine and process), and our liability is capped at the fees you paid. Full terms are on our policies page.
After the design

Design first — build it your way

We design it right whether or not you build with us. That independence is the point — you get a design you can trust, not a hook to sell you steel.

No factory lock-in

Open standards (HASCO/DME/Misumi). Take the design to your shop, another shop, or ours — your call.

No tricks in the design

We never pad or compromise a design to force you to build with us. You pay for the design; nothing is hidden in the steel.

Build with us — optional

Want it made too? Building is an optional follow-on, not a separate upsell. If we build it, the full machining drawings come with the build.

Straight answers

Everything buyers ask, before they commit

Tap a question. (These are also written into the page's structured data, so Google and AI assistants can quote them.)

What kinds of molds do you design?
Plastic injection molds for thermoplastics. Other processes — MIM, die casting, blow molding, stamping — are handled case by case. Ask before you send files and we'll tell you honestly if it's a fit.
What mold-base and design standards do you work to?
HASCO, DME and Misumi standard mold bases — internationally recognized systems — and we deliver STEP, IGES and native files. Because China and overseas machining differ, the full 2D manufacturing drawings are released when we build the mold; design-only orders include the 3D design and design intent.
How much does a new injection mold design cost?
From $800. The final price depends on part size and complexity, cavity count, cold vs. hot runner, undercuts and side-actions, and tolerance or surface needs. You get one fixed quote before any work begins.
How do payments work? Do I pay everything upfront?
No — you never pay 100% before you see results. Payment is split into milestones by order size: $1,000 or less is 50% to start and 50% on delivery; above $1,000 is 50% / 40% / 10% (start, then concept & drawings approved, then after handoff). Final editable files are released on final payment. After we quote you, we send a personal link that shows your exact amounts.
How long does mold design take?
Usually 5–15 business days after we have a clean 3D file, the material and your requirements. A simple single-cavity mold is fast; a full multi-cavity mold with a Moldflow run takes longer. If a prerequisite is missing, the clock doesn't start.
What do I need to send to get started?
A finished 3D model of the part (STEP is best), the target plastic, your annual volume, and any tolerance, surface or assembly notes. Your 3D file is the dimensional reference — we design to the geometry you supply and don't re-measure or reverse-engineer it, so make sure critical dimensions are already defined. Only have a sample or a 2D drawing? Tell us and we'll advise on getting a proper 3D model first.
Is the mold designed fully automatically by AI?
No — and we won't pretend it is. AI handles the repetitive drafting and checks, but a mold maker with 40 years of experience reviews every mold. Undercuts, mechanisms and parting always get human review.
Do you guarantee the mold will run perfectly in production?
No honest supplier can — the result also depends on the machine, process and material lot. What we stand behind: every finding is labeled by how it was verified, liability is capped at the fees you paid, and you get two free re-reviews plus a 30-day free fix for any error on our side.
Is my design and IP safe? Do you sign an NDA?
Yes. We sign an NDA on request, before you send any full files. Your 3D data is never reused on another project, and case work is only shown with the client's permission. Before an NDA is in place, we can review appearance screenshots only.
How do we handle the time difference?
We work in UTC+8 with fixed overlap hours for replies (European afternoon, North American morning). Every delivery round comes with a written PDF summary, so nothing hinges on live chat — and we can add a short screen-recording walkthrough on request.
What deliverables and file formats do I receive?
Every order includes the full 3D mold design (STEP + native), a labeled DFM report, a Moldflow summary when included, a bill of standard parts and design notes — all in English. The full 2D manufacturing drawings are released when we build the mold, because China and overseas machining processes differ and shop-floor drawings written for one can misfire in another.
Do I get the machining drawings if I build the mold elsewhere?
You always own the 3D design, design intent, DFM report and BOM. The detailed 2D machining drawings are produced for the specific shop cutting the steel — China and overseas processes differ, and the wrong machining package causes real problems. So we release the full machining drawings when we build the mold, where we control the process end to end. If you build elsewhere, we hand over the 3D design and coordinate with your shop.
Can you build the mold too, or only design it?
Design is our core service and it stands on its own — you can take it to any shop. Building is an optional follow-on, not a separate upsell: if you'd like, we can make the mold as well. We never require it and never lock a design to one factory, and our fee is the design, not hidden markup in the steel. If we build it, the full machining drawings come with the build.
I already have a China-built mold that won't run. Can you help?
Yes, but that's a different service. If it's already making bad parts, Production Rescue diagnoses and fixes it. If you're moving or inheriting a mold and want it checked first, a DFM & Mold Audit reads the risks. Message us and we'll point you to the right one.
